Banners as symbols of concern for contemporary issues

Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School is considered to be the top boy-only school in Taiwan. Every year, its graduating students plan and organize their own graduation ceremony. The school is usually supportive of the students. This year, the graduating students hung up five banners. These banners are respectively yellow, green, blue, purple, and rainbow-colored, each representing nuclear power, environmental protection, teenage stress, anti-violence, as well as LGBT issues in that order. This action, however, was protested against by Defend Family Student League. They made many phone calls to the school, requesting that the rainbow banner be removed.

Chairman of the graduation planning committee: We’ve got critical thinking capability!

According to an exclusive report from Up Media, the chairman of the 69th graduation’s planning committee said that the school received many irrational phone calls during the graduation. To avoid causing further disturbance to teachers and other students, they decided to remove all five banners.

However, this incident did not end there. It went on. After discussing with the school many times, the students decided to make adjustments to the original design and to continue hanging the modified banners, hoping people could view the banners as a work of art.

Anti-LGBT groups calling Department of Education to protest

Defend Family Student League blamed this incident on the Department of Education, expressing anger about gay issues entering school campus. However, the executive officer of the gender equality office said in an interview that they support and embrace gender diversity. They would also engage in active advocacy to protect gay rights. Even though these high school students are young, they show a high level of maturity in their concern for the society, respect for the LGBT rights, and communication with the school. They are much more mature than those irrational protesters.
